Thank you for inviting me to judge at this very friendly Collie Club Show. It is always a delight to judge here, so close to home. The venue has lovely facilities to show outside and inside, if necessary. The hospitality is always superb. I was very impressed with the number and quality of my entries, especially when I was a ‘stand-in’ judge. Thank you very much to Ros MacDonald for being my attentive steward.
VETERAN DOG (4)
I did not think there was much to choose between the first two quality dogs.
1 Hogg’s Brookynut Storm’s Legacy. Almost 9 years old and a credit to his owner. A good body shape, with everything in proportion. This dog showed his head off better. He had good balance, placement of eyes and carriage of ears, giving a kind expression. Good dentition. Correct forequarters and hindquarters with well-bent stifles. Moved well for his age. In super coat for an ‘oldie’, with mane and frill very abundant.
2 Scamp’s Aaronwell Ayebeecee at Marketdene. Almost 10 and doing very well for his age. Attractive tri colour with correct tan markings. A shame he did not want to show himself off. Nice overall shape and good muscle tone. Lovely masculine head, giving the sweet expression. Flat skull and good muzzle, presenting a well-blunted clean wedge and nice eyes. Moved well for his age. Presented in excellent condition with a good coat.
3 Hunt’s Wicani Frosted Orange.
MINOR PUPPY DOG (1)
1 Randall’s Ladnar Call My Name. A very promising 8-month-old puppy. Clear blue merle with good colour spread. Lovely strong masculine head. Flat skull, well-rounded blunt muzzle, good underjaw and dentition. Obliquely set eyes. I expect he will grow into his slightly heavy ears. Lovely body proportions, bone and construction. Forequarters coming along with a well developing chest. His topline was a little loose on the move, due to his age. Super parallel hocks. Moved well with plenty of drive.
PUPPY DOG (6)
1 Shipp’s Tremaro Special Agent. Almost 12 months old sable and white puppy dog. He caught my eye as soon as he came into the ring and shows great promise for the future. Beautifully presented in good coat and texture. Well proportioned head, with two parallel planes and correct amount of stop. Eyes set obliquely and nice small ears, set correctly, contributed to the desired masculine sweet expression. Good lay of shoulder and bend of stifle. Nicely bodied. Moved well.
2 Randall’s Ladnar Call Me Maybe. Litter brother to the Minor Puppy. Another good blue merle for coat and colour. He has a lovely masculine head with two level planes, obliquely set dark almond-shaped eyes and well set slightly large ears. Nice length of neck, good front and length of body. Still looks like a baby in this class with topline a little loose. Moved well. In super condition and presented well.
3 Lockyer’s Gataj I Am Maximus.
Res Berry’s ‘Twas Baron of Virginia (IMP USA).
VHC Melonie’s Wisewyn Lake Field Lasting Glory.
JUNIOR DOG (3)
1 Melonie’s Wisewyn Eternal Life (IMP PRT). He won this class on his well-constructed body of correct length and proportion. Well laid shoulders and muscled hindquarters with well-bent stifles. Wedge shaped head, flat skull and well-rounded blunt muzzle. Correctly set tipped ears. Moved very well, but it was a shame he did not behave himself better. His tail curls right over his back which spoils his outline on the move. Coat not at it’s best, maybe his age.
2 Bolt’s Gataj Bonnie Eddie. This dog was beautifully presented, in super coat. But unfortunately, the body underneath did not match the dog above. Nice head, correctly proportioned. Well set eyes and ears but did not seem to want to use his ears on the day.
3 Berry’s ‘Twas Baron of Virginia (IMP USA).
SPECIAL YEARLING DOG (2)
1 Lockyer’s Prince of Sunlight Thrilled By The Difference at Gataj (IMP HUN). A nice smart looking dog, presented in super coat. Well-proportioned masculine head. Flat skull, correct stop and well-rounded blunt muzzle. Obliquely set dark almond eyes and neat well-placed ears, giving a kind expression. Super outline, level top-line and good length of back with strong hindquarters. Moved well.
2 Melonie’s Wisewyn Eternal Life (IMP PRT). AS ABOVE.
NOVICE DOG (1)
1 Melonie’s Wisewyn Eternal Life (IMP PRT). AS ABOVE.
GRADUATE DOG (3)
1 Skinner’s Ladnar Makeithappen For Nikal. I see I have judged this 2-year-old Merle dog before and pleased he has now grown up, behaving himself better. He easily won this class, with a good coat of excellent clear colour with contrasting markings. He presented a good balanced outline when standing. He has a masculine well-proportioned head with flat skull, perceptible stop and well-rounded blunt muzzle. Almond shaped dark eyes and good ears. Full dentition with correct scissor bite. Good reach of neck, well laid shoulders, straight forelegs, excellent depth of chest and well sprung ribs. Correct topline and rise over the loin. Good bend of stifle, well let down parallel hocks and nice length of tail. He has good flowing movement, effortlessly covering the ground with ease. Friendly and confident temperament.
2 Bolt & Cronk’s Revdvicki’s Raffles At Chelborn. An older tri coloured dog with a masculine head. Nice rounded muzzle and strong underjaw. Dark almond eyes set obliquely, ears appeared wider apart. Correct length of arched neck. Good outline. Moved OK. Presented in very good coat.
3 Hunt’s Wicani The Makers Mark.
POST GRADUATE DOG (2)
1 Skinner’s Ladnar Makeithappen For Nikal. AS ABOVE.
2 Bolt & Hollywood’s Amalie a Chance to Shine. Nearly 4 and a half years old. A sable dog who has a pleasing head, but I consider the eyes too small for me, which then spoils the whole look of his head. He does not appear to have the front angulation of the above, which makes him a little hunched backed with short strides. Nice straight, parallel well let down hocks. In lovely coat.
LIMIT DOG (3)
1 Hawkins’ Serenlas Black Magic. Nice mature 3-year-old dog. Who has a wonderful tri-colour, shiny coat of harsh texture. Jet-black jacket with rich tan markings. He has a strong head with parallel planes and good length of muzzle. Well set ears, used well. Nice length of arched neck, enhanced by full white collar, flowing into good shoulders. Ample chest, correct topline and ribbing. Good hindquarters with well-bent stifles. Hocks well let down and parallel. In super coat, well-constructed and in good condition. Moved very well. Neat feet.
2 Hunt’s Wicani The Makers Mark. Third in Graduate Dog. A 6-year-old dog of a different type. Not such a good head as the dog above. Good length of muzzle but ears a little wide apart and eyes not so oblique as I would like. Reasonable neck and good depth of ribs. Not in such good coat as above. Moved quite well.
OPEN DOG (2)
1 Flower’s Androma Dreamcatcher at Serenlas (IMP SVN). A very impressive 6-year-old shaded sable and white dog with correct conformation, giving an elegant outline. He has a clean wedge-shaped head, with two level planes, equal length with perceptible stop. Dark almond eyes, obliquely set and well-placed small ears, giving the true sweet expression. Good length of arched neck flowing into well laid shoulders. Straight, muscular forelegs. Correct topline, length of back and spring of ribs. Well boned legs but not overdone. Muscled hindquarters and well bent stifles. Hocks parallel, well-let down and powerful. Moved with enthusiasm, long stride in the front and plenty of drive from the rear. Correct tail carriage. Presented In super coat. A very nice dog, a picture of excellent breed type.
2 Berry’s ‘Twas Baron of Virginia (IMP USA). A 10-month-old tri colour puppy that was Reserve in Dog Puppy and Third in Junior Dog. Who was out of his depth in an Open class at this show.

VETERAN BITCH (7)
1 Benton’s Ch Brooklynson Jane Russell of Oakestelle VW ShCEx. Wow, what a wonderful 10-year-old sable bitch who belies her age, pushed the youngsters hard for top awards. She must have been ‘out of this world’ as a youngster. She is so beautifully put together, creating a very impressive outline. Such a worthy champion. Super feminine head with parallel planes and perceptible stop. Flat skull and nicely rounded muzzle. Super dark almond eyes, well set ears giving the correct sweet expression. Nice neck, well laid shoulders with good return of upper arm. Has fore chest, a level back with slight rise over her loins and excellent rear angulation. Well up on pasterns for an ‘oldy’. Presented in good coat. Needs to be moved a little slower these days, but a joy to watch. Just gorgeous, she has it all.
2 Ware’s Kind of Magic Della Buca Delle Fate at Wassail (Imp Ita). A nice type, good for 7 years old. Lovely tri colour bitch, well up on pasterns for her age. Correct feminine head with nice parallel planes to muzzle and skull, with slight stop separating them equally. Well placed small, tipped ears complimenting her dark almond shaped eyes to give the correct expression. Good reach of arched neck flowing down to well laid shoulders. Sufficient chest, nice turn of stifle, well let down vertical parallel hocks. Moved well and presented in good coat.
3 Skinner’s Samhaven Time is Money with Nikal.
Res Berry’s Wicani Licence to Thrill.
MINOR PUPPY BITCH (5)
1 Hawkins’ Brilyn’s Breckamore Crimson Embers. 6 months old, very raw baby, but such a sweetie. A promising sable bitch who will need time to mature. She presented such a lovely outline, good shape and perfect balance. Nice head of good length, good ears and excellent eyes, giving the sweet appealing expression. Lovely neck, well laid shoulders, good body and nicely angulated hindquarters. She moved very well with good stride and drive from the rear, which won her top spot in this class, although she came in her baby clothes.
2 Baker’s Salsina’s My Girl of Marilake. 8 months old and also still very much a baby, still a bit loose on the move. But she has a super outline. Well-balanced feminine head, with correct planes and perceptible stop. Neat well used ears and obliquely placed dark almond eyes, giving a lovely expression. Good length of neck, well bodied and correct length of back. Well presented in extremely good coat and condition.
3 Turner’s Ladnar Secret Gift for Chaizonz.
Res Mason’s Willowcombe Dancing Angel with Lynocean.
VHC Berry’s Rocheview Felicity.
PUPPY BITCH (5)
1 Shipp’s Tremaro Million Dollar Baby. I really fell for this 11-month-old sable and white puppy bitch, who to me is what a young Rough Collie should look like. Having studied the breed standard in detail and looked at various top winners in the breed, I had based the type I was looking for on this year’s Best of Breed at Crufts. I thought this bitch puppy was a pretty close match, little did I know they were mother and daughter! I felt this puppy had that true Rough Collie appearance of being very feminine, with impassive dignity but plenty of strength. She was very confident with a super temperament. She has a lovely outline with perfect balance and should mature into a quality adult bitch. Lovely well-proportioned head with two parallel places and perceptible stop. Wonderful obliquely set almond shaped dark eyes and well-set ears to give that wonderful, sweet intelligent expression that captivated me. Correct reach of neck into well laid shoulders, super flow of topline, well sprung ribs and deep chest. Muscled hind- quarters with well bent stifles and straight hocks. She moved so lightly and gracefully with plenty of reach and drive. Excellently presented, in coat, condition and handling. I wish her a very bright future.
2 Llewellyn’s Salsina Blushing Rose. Another beautiful sable and white bitch puppy with so much to offer. Super well-proportioned head with perceptible stop. Lovely dark almond eyes of correct size. Well placed small ears to give the desired sweet expression. Excellent neck, spring of ribs and length of back. I just thought she did not have the topline of the winner. Good hindquarters and well let down hocks and low set tail. Moved very well. Presented in lovely coat and condition.
3 Lockyer’s Gataj All That Glitters.
Res Congdon’s Aaronwell Another Love.
VHC Ware’s Millubie Enchanted at Wassail NAF TAF (Imp Serb).
JUNIOR BITCH (5)
1 Hawkins & Flower’s Serenlas Edge of Heaven. Just over a year old and came in her underclothes today, not surprising at this sort of age. Could easily see her well-balanced outline of body. Very nice head of correct proportion and shape. Parallel head planes, correct stop with dark almond eyes, giving pleasant feminine expression. Good neck and shoulders with depth of chest. Nicely bodied, ample bone and good feet. Steady on the move. Good hindquarters. Moved well. A lovely type, just no coat.
2 Hewett’s Serenlas Borrowed Heaven. Sister to the above, with similar attributes. She has an excellent full blue merle coat. Nice head with good length of muzzle, perceptible stop and medium dark almond eyes. Good neck, flowing into a well angulated shoulders. Slightly long back, good hindquarters with well let down hocks. Her movement was a little strange and one-sided, which was a shame.
3 Berry’s Rocheview Felicity.
SPECIAL YEARLING BITCH (5)
1 Flower’s Serenlas Truly Scruptious. She won this class with ease. I see I have judged her before as a puppy and remarked on her interesting name. I am glad she is developing into a lovely sable bitch. She creates a lovely outline of perfect balance. A good well-blunted clean wedge of a head with flat skull. Eyes of correct size and position, giving that ‘sweet’ expression. Lovely ears finish the picture. Well arched neck and good shoulder placement. Correct body shape, good topline and tail set, everything flowed. Well-muscled hindquarters and well bent stifles. A very sound mover, up on pasterns with good feet. In good coat.
2 Lockyer’s Beldones Double Illusion at Gataj. Quite a hard decision between these next two. I felt this bitch had a nice outline and a good coat. She moved a lot better. The other one carried her tail too gaily for me.
3 Ware’s Wassail the Last Dance.
NOVICE BITCH (6)
1 Llewellyn’s Salsina Mystic Rose. Sister to the second in Puppy bitch. Absolutely lovely for 10 months old. Nice golden sable coloured beautiful coat. Presents a lovely outline of good proportion. Nicely balanced head, medium sized almond shaped dark eyes and small well-placed ears, giving the required sweet expression. Well bodied, with good angulation front and back. Moved very well with good stride in front and drive from the rear.
2 Baker’s Salsina’s My Girl of Marilake. AS ABOVE.
3 Hewett’s Serenlas Borrowed Heaven.
Res Melonie’s Atirakin Spirit Moon.
VHC Berry’s Rocheview Felicity.
GRADUATE BITCH (3)
1 Berry’s Atirakin Wild Hialeah. A tri-coloured bitch, who I thought had a better general outline and type. A good colour with rich tan markings. Ears just tipped. Well presented, good angulation and moved OK.
2 Melonie’s Atirakin Star Dunes. Daughter of above, who was rather out of coat, making her look rather bare.
3 Mills’ Amalie Loves to Shimmy with Willowcombe.
POST GRADUATE (5)
1 Mills’ Samhaven Super Natural at Willowcombe. A 3 ½ year old blue merle, splashed with dark marbling. Unfortunately, she was a little overweight, affecting her enthusiasm on the move. A shame, as she is a very nice type with a pleasing outline. Beautiful wedge-shaped head. Flat skull, perceptible stop and well-rounded muzzle. She has particularly good dark almond shaped obliquely set eyes and well filled foreface, giving a sweet expression. Good neck, depth to brisket, length of back, spring of ribs, rise over loin and straight hocks. Presented with harsh thick coat with plenty of mane and frill.
2 Rae’s Gataj Majestic Hope. A feminine sable and white bitch, who had a pleasing outline. Beautifully presented coat. Moved well, extending out in front with drive from the rear. But for me, her head detracted. I felt her eyes were getting small and her ears may need attention.
3 Berry’s Wicani Licence to Thrill.
Res Melonie’s Atirakin Spirit Moon.
LIMIT BITCH (8)
1 Ware’s Wassail Call the Midwife. A nice mature bitch that won this class on movement and general confirmation. She moved very soundly, with good stride at the front and plenty of drive from the rear. So light and effortless. She was out of coat which did not enhance the overall picture, which was a shame. She had a lovely head, flat skull and medium-sized almond-shaped dark eyes. Small, well-placed ears, giving the sweet expression. Nicely arched neck and good body. Correct oval feet.
2 Lockyer’s Gataj All That Sparkles. A well-presented feminine rich sable and white bitch, with a beautiful coat. She presented a well-balanced outline. A good head with medium sized almond shaped dark eyes. Nicely set ears, used well. Giving the required sweet expression. Well bodied, with nice rise over the loin. Neat oval feet. Moved better than the others below.
3 Llewellyn’s Avonfair Secret Love Letter to Salsina.
Res Scamp’s Aaronwell Allure in Black.
VHC Berry’s Atirakin Wild Hialeah.
OPEN BITCH (6)
1 Flower’s Serenlas Heaven in Blu. What an elegant blue merle bitch this is, at nearly 7 years old, such a mover and handled so well to make the most of her. Super head of good length. Flat skull and well-rounded blunt muzzle. Parallel planes with perceptible stop. Lovely medium sized almond shaped dark eyes, obliquely set. Well used small nicely set ears, creating the typical expression. Good length of arched neck flowing into well laid shoulders. Nicely flowing body with everything in the right place creating a super outline. She is such a good mover, so light on her feet, flowing effortlessly around the ring. Well up on her pasterns. In super coat with glamorous furnishings, finished the picture on the day.
2 Congdon’s Riverside Song Desiderata at Aaronwell (Imp Rom). Another lovely feminine tri colour bitch, who has a very nice outline of perfect balance. A very nice well-proportioned head, flat skull, straight planes and perceptible stop. Medium sized almond shaped dark eyes and well-placed ears. Super forequarters and nicely bodied. Beautifully presented. Moved very well, striding out in front and driving from the rear.
