April 2025 Open Smooth Collie Critique

Many thanks for the invitation to judge for a club that is a favorite of mine. My stewards kept things running smoothly! I was delighted with the entry of 24, with just 3 missing. Many thanks for your entries, and congratulations on amassing the major awards.

Veteran Dog (1)

1 Denton’s CH. BRAKENHAYE FIELDS OF GOLD. S/w of 9 years, stood well, with good length of neck, balanced by good length of back. Well boned, with correctly proportioned head, from correctly placed stop, well-shaped eyes and parallel lines to head, and flat skull with nicely moulded wedge. Good depth to head. Used ears well. Strode out with drive with soundness coming from well-placed shoulders and strong hocks. Loosing coat but well presented.

Puppy Dog (1)

1 Thomas & Lusty’s BLAMORDER SIDE HUSTLE WITH MOURNEBRAKE. 11mth old with a good shape, nicely bone & bodied who stood well. Masculine without being heavy, his head handles well, with correct eye placement and neat ears. Good dentition, underjaw clean with moulded head. Well presented & coated, a little tan coming through though. He is well boned, nice spring of rib, good overall length of back. Well angulated throughout with good bend of stifle, parallel hocks and good tail set & carriage. Moved a little loosely, but this should tighten with age.

Postgraduate D (2)

1 Acford’s CONEYPARK MATTIE BROWN. I judged this dog a week prior to this appointment. Outside on the grass he made the most of the ring and strode out well. Standing, he appears balanced with good overall length of body. His head is clean with correctly placed stop and flat skull. well placed ears that he used well. In the sunshine his eyes appeared a good shape. Pleasing overall head wise, onto good length of neck and well-placed shoulders. Moved nicely when settled.
2 Riva’s MANORDEIFI ROCK ON. In comparison to the winner, this dog appeared slightly loaded over the shoulders, which affected his front movement, making his appear wider in the chest. He has a pleasing enough expression and was quite relaxed when standing. Good tail set and carriage, his rear movement ok.

Open Dog (4-1)

1 Martin’s CH. STURTMOOR ARCEUS’S LEGACY JW. 21 mth S/w Have seen this young lad mature nicely and feel he has yet to reach his potential. Stood well, showing his balanced outline, good reach of neck and spring of ribs, well set on tail. Head handles well, from correctly placed stop, almond eyes, correctly placed ears which he used well. Good depth to his head, if I was being picky, I would like a little bit more underjaw. His front is correct, and he has enough bone. Strode out well with parallel hocks and good front extension. Has the exuberance of youth, and gave his handler a hard time, but pleased to award him BD & RBOB
2 Wesley’s CH. CONSTELLA HAZY COSMIC JIVE JW. Another quality exhibit, with all the essentials. Nice head with dark eye, nice underjaw, well used & placed ears. Slightly deeper in chest & ribs as to be expected at his age. Moved well, particularly in front with nice extension. RBD.

Veteran Bitch (4-2)

1 Lusty’s CH. BLAMORDER ICE CREAM DREA VW. Almost 9 yr old nicely made b/m with overall good bone & body proportions. Lovely reach of neck, enhanced by white markings. I would prefer a clearer blue, but she is nicely broken up. Head handles well, good eye placement correct stop, flat skull and well-placed ears. Good shoulder placement. Well-rounded ribcage thought she had excellent extension on the move. Slightly fidgety when stood but still gained BVIB and BVIS.
2 Benton’s CH. OAKESTELLE ARTEMIS ShCEx VW. 7yr b/m who is a tad finer than 1. feminine throughout, she has a good head, with adequate underjaw, and well-placed stop. Nice eyes and good ear carriage giving appealing expression. Good length of neck, nicely sprung ribs. Good rise over loin, well bent stifle. Moved out well, with good front movement. Overall made a balanced picture.

Puppy B (2)

1 Benton’s BLAMORDER DOUBLE OR QUITS OF OAKESTELLE. Lovely feminine b/m of excellent colour. she has a balanced outline in profile. Head handles nicely, with balanced foreface to back skull. Correctly placed stop, I would like a bit darker eye, but they are well shaped. Nice flat skull, good ear placement. Well laid shoulders from good length of neck, over to well sprung ribs, slight rise over loin. Moved out steadily, with lovely front action. She is a tad loose behind but forgave this on the uneven ground. Delighted to award her BPIB, and then on referee’s decision BPIS over the rough, who was not performing for the award. Well done.
2 Watkins BLAMORDER UNLUCKY FOR SOME. Litter sister, who is finer all over than the winner. She would benefit from the schooling of her sister! Overall, has a good head, nice underjaw, well placed stop, dark eye, her ears are a bit light. On the move, she started erratically, but when settled it was good enough. Shown in good coat and condition, would like to see her when she matures and settles into herself.

Junior B (3)

1 Cole & Fort’s SHULUNE IMPERIAL RUM PUNCH JW. Lovely tri with excellent temperament. Balanced in outline, with flowing lines from moulded head, good underjaw, well placed stop. Ideally shaped eye with good ear carriage. Nice reach of neck, good ribcage and length of back. Very balanced height to length ratio. Moved out well, from good angulations. RBB in some lovely company.
2 Rundle’s SHULUNE IMPERIAL BONNY BLU. Litter sister to 1. B/m heavier marked that I would like. Her head flared a bit; she has a nice dark eye with good placement. Flat skull, well placed ears, although one a tad light. Good length of neck & depth of chest, balanced in height/length ratio. Moved ok.

Postgraduate B (2)

1 Rogers BLAMORDER HIGH BROW TAF. Balanced tri of 31/2 years, with a good reach of neck, well-shaped body, nice width and depth of chest. Well-proportioned head, with pleasing expression from nicely shaped dark eye, and flat skull. Moved well, with parallel hocks and good extension.
2 Caulfield’s CONSTELLA VEGA LUMINOSA. Found this bitch to be finer than 1, and a little deeper in head. I would like more heart room, and more spring of ribs. Nice head, with good eye shape producing a pleasing expression. Stood nicely and moved out soundly.

THIS WAS A LOVELY CLASS, THANK YOU FOR BRINGING THEM!

1 Sweeney & Lusty’s CH. BLAMORDER DO QUITE NICELY AW(b). B/m that I found most appealing from this entry. She has slightly more bone & substance yet still retains feminity. I liked her soft expression, and ‘kind’ eye. Head handled well, free from flaring, correctly placed stop. Used her well placed ears to advantage. Good reach of neck onto good shoulders, lovely width of chest and well sprung ribs. Good angulations throughout and correct length of tail. Showed well, on sturdy legs and neat feet, complimented by good presentation and being nicely coated. Strode out well, and I was delighted to her BOB and then in agreement with my co judge BIS.
2 Benton’s CH. BRACKENHAYE QUEEN OF HEARTS OF OAKESTELLE. Another lovely bitch who today was a tad unsettled. Again, has all the essentials, good head properties, nice length of neck, well sprung ribs, slightly deeper in chest than 1, but so well made. Lovely shoulder angulations, combined with a good bend of stifle made for a good driving movement away and towards. Her markings make for a deceptive opinion of her length of neck, but on handling shows it is of good length. Shown in good coat and condition. Very close decision between 2 and 3 who are litter sisters.
Denton’s CH. BRECKENHAYE HEART ANDD SOUL, made for an excellent trio of ladies. Truly all could (and probably have) change places on another occasion.
